A magnificent Lego set... not meant for kids...
By J. DEMELO
What you have here is a 1,664 piece marvel of Lego engineering. It never ceases to amaze me as to how well thought out most of Lego's advanced sets are. Sure, there is always room for improvement in some areas. But let's not forget that this "toy" is made up of small, plastic bricks. How amazing is that? I'll break my review down into sections:

General:
Build time: Approx. 6 to 7 hours - It got to be a bit tiresome, but I managed to build the ship on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Keep in mind, I did stop to eat and stretch from time to time. Most people should be able to get this done in probably under 7 hours. I think it took me a bit longer because I didn't separate the pieces well enough, so I spent too much time digging through a bowl of pieces... trying to find that one tiny elusive piece.

Packaging: Packaging is what you'd expect, though I was a bit surprised. There really isn't any rhyme or reason as to why the box is so big. The pieces are all packaged in clear plastic bags, which are then thrown haphazardly into the larger box along with the instructions. Everything that came in this box could have easily been packaged in a box 1/3 the size. As a result from all the bouncing around in there, my instruction booklets were creased and a bit tattered. I think they put it in such a large box to give it a grander, more impressive appearance. It's rather silly.

Method: I had two large tupperware containers. I placed the larger pieces in one, and the smaller pieces in another. This wasn't a good method. I spent way too much time sorting through pieces trying to find the one piece I needed. I'm an adult. I haven't really built a Lego of this size, and I haven't really built Legos since I was a kid. I probably should have thought it out better prior to opening all of the plastic bags and spilling all of the pieces into one container. Also, there really doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason as to why certain pieces are in certain bags with other pieces. I'm sure it's just a manufacturing detail. It would be nice if you could build the ship by going through bag 1, then bag 2, etc. Oh well.

The Ship Upon Completion:
Once you've put this thing together it really is just an admirable masterpiece. All of the details, the different layers, the compartments, etc. It brings out the kid in you all over again. I put it on a shelf and admired it for days... taking it down to look at it up close and open up the different compartments. Yes... I even played with it a bit. Let's face it, it is a toy. It is MEANT for children. So once you complete it, how does it fare? Let's break it down into Pros and Cons of the completed ship.

CONS:
The Equipment (cannons, figures, tools): The cannons themselves are fine, but I'll never understand why Lego only gives you four when there is room for eight. I used to have a Caribbean Cruiser when I was a kid. That boat had room for four cannons and Lego only provided two. I just don't get it. When you're spending $180+ dollars on a massive toy, why wouldn't they simply give you all eight cannons? It seems really stupid, and just annoying. The figures themselves are fine too, but for a boat this size I would have liked to have more. Plus the rifles, swords, and pistols just really aren't enough to go around. Is it too much to ask to have one rifle, one pistol, and one sword for each figure that comes with the ship? And guess what... there is no Lego store, online or located in any city... that you can use to buy more cannons, figures, or tools. So, not only do they short you on all of the above, but they make no effort to provide you with a method to buy more. What did I do to remedy all of these complaints? I went to [...] an absolutely fantastic 3rd party international fan site that specializes in putting people together to buy and sell Lego pieces, both used and brand new. I bought four more cannons (had to buy the pieces individually), more soldiers, some pirates to use as lowly deck hands, and more weapons. Now it looks like a real Imperial Flagship. I also obtained some additional pieces to place behind the cannons as back-stops. The cannons were rolling back out of their portholes into the interior of the boat way too easily. Now they are held firmly in place and look great. Why didn't Lego think to do this? Come on, Lego. Give us our money's worth.

Durability: While the Lego pieces themselves are very durable, this set is making me seriously consider putting some super glue to hold some of the parts permanently in place. The masts, because they are so tall, tend to sway and will start to come loose, especially if you've got a figure standing up top to add weight. It's not a big deal to tighten them up into place, but still. Also, the front end of the boat is a bit shaky. I remember, as I was putting it together, being a little shocked at just how little was holding together major pieces of the hull. I think I may possibly glue it in the future, though I tend not to handle the ship all that much for it to be an issue. This is the main reason why I really don't feel like it's durable enough to withstand being played with by children. I was a meticulous child that took really good care of his toys... but more rambunctious youths will destroy this boat in seconds. With that being said... keep your instructions saved away for when you need to do some repairs. Also, the top layer of the ship does not have much holding it in place. But this sort of makes sense, because they are then easy to remove in order to access the lower decks where the cannons are held.

That's it for Cons... on to the Pros...

PROS:
Awesomeness: This set really will just make you smile over and over again. There's a jail cell, complete with a pirate captain prisoner, a rat, and two sets of shackles (in case you want to throw the captain's daughter in there too... yes, it comes with a captain's daughter). There is a kitchen, complete with a cook, some fish, some pots and pans, some knives, a working rotisserie with chicken legs, and a work table complete with a goblet, a carrot, and some carrot slices. There is a captain's quarters, complete with an organ (piano), a treasure chest, a treasure map, a dresser, and a looking glass on a stand which can be pointed out one of the many windows. There is a working anchor, a charming swordfish on the prow, and the cannon decks are well equipped with crates, torches, and cannonballs. For all the extras that it lacks, as I mentioned above, it really is just a fantastic Lego set. The details are all there, from the lanterns on the top deck to the feather plumes for your captain's hat.

The Sails: As a kid, I never liked the blue or red striped sails that Lego chose to put on their pirate ships. I thought they looked unauthentic and kind of dumb. I love the sails that come with this set. They have subtle details and just look great.

The Size: This thing is simply massive. It is easily three feet long from tip to end, and about 2 feet tall from bottom to tip of the highest mast. It's very impressive. It is somewhat heavy too, so take care when carrying it.

Summary:
Well that's about it. Is this set worth $180? Tough to say... I think it could either be a bit cheaper, or they could stand to include a bit more. But I'm glad to have it and I definitely enjoy it. Those of you who are Lego fans will definitely find this set to be the pride of your collection. Sure, there's the larger sets, like the Tower Bridge or Taj Mahal... but honestly... Is anything cooler than a big, detailed ship? I think not. All in all, four outstanding stars. It's awesome stuff like this that will keep toys like Lego continuing on through the ages.

Maybe the best lego set of all time
By Aristotle
This ship is great. I love the lego pirate theme, and this ship fits right into my collection. The only problem is that it overshadows my other sets when I display them together. I believe it is my favorite lego pirate theme set, I even like it more than my much loved imperial trading post.
This ship is really big. I am surprised lego made a ship of this size, especially for the imperials. I would think a large ship for the pirates would be more popular and sell better, but I am glad that they created this ship instead. It has enough space for 8 cannons below deck! (although it only comes with 4). It is awesome how you can remove the deck to see the cannons below. There are lots of details, such as in the kitchen area below deck, as well as the captain's quarters. The rudder moves (although it is not steered by the wheel), and you can crank up the anchor. If you enjoy the building process, building this ship takes quite a bit of time. You will not snap it together in a couple of hours.

Any criticisms of the ship are relatively minor compared to its positives. It could use eight cannons instead of four, and more minfigs. I would like to see a large crow's nest in a ship this size. I really don't know how else they could improve this, except cut the price.

This is expensive, but a must have for the serious lego pirate collector. This set is as much for adults like me who collect and have found childhood memories of legos than actual kids, given the expense and the time needed to put it together. I was wondering if I would regret spending $179 on this "toy." I assure you I have not!

Great lego set
By fly_n_low
If you like legos and you like ships, this is a no-brainer. It's very fun to build and very cleverly designed so it's fun to play with. I highly recommend it.
