I've brought back some sweet memories...
By Rashed Pulak Islam
You all will think I was crazy buying the original Pokemon cards (that hit the market and took it by storm over 10 years ago) in this day and age. Well, I felt simply nostalgic. That's all. I used to be a huge fan of the Pokemon cards. I tried to collect as much of the cards as I possibly could afford. Of course, our money resources were limited back then. But nowadays, it was simply a matter of ordering it from an online website and waiting for a few days for it to arrive. So I patiently waited and waited. And then finally: it took 7 business days to arrive.

I was ecstatic. I purchased a BOOSTER BOX (which I've always wanted given from either Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh) of 36 packs. I was jumping up and down so hard that my family felt it was an earthquake. I couldn't wait to open my box full of cards! But I must say, the booster box was a lot smaller than it actually looked on the website. It was the size of my hand palm (not that it really matters, anyway).

Now I'll admit: the main reason why I bought the basic booster box was because of Charizard. That was (and still is) one of THEE most sought-after cards in Pokemon. I remember back in the day, I saw a place where they were selling single Pokemon cards. I saw Charizard, with a price tag of well over $200 (I think it was first edition). It costed more than a basic booster box, where you COULD get a Charizard out of 36 packs! Whether you get a first edition, normal edition, or base 2nd edition, Charizard is still VERY rare.

Ok, now I'll admit I did not get Charizard out of the 36 packs (and I thought I had a pretty good chance of getting one too). But I did get the following AWESOME holo rares: Alakazam, Magneton, Clefairy, Gyarados (2), Nidoking (2), Venusaur (2), Blastoise, Zapdos, and Hitmonchan. I wasn't THAT close, but hey, I got Venusaur and Blastoise at least! But I do know I missed out on a lot of other rare holos, such as Ninetales, Machamp, Charizard, Poliwrath, and Mewtwo.

But anyway, it may seem silly that I spent about $200 just for a box set of POKEMON cards that are well over a decade old, but I wanted to revive the memories that I had when I used to be a huge fanatic of collecting/trading them. Nowadays, none of my friends have their Pokemon cards anymore. So, of course I haven't told them yet that I have bought a booster box.

But the bottom line is I felt nostalgic. The Pokemon cards, nowadays, are very less appealing compared to the originals (in my opinion). The originals are still the best. And as the saying goes, "The classics are NEVER outdated".

If you're feeling the same as I felt, then go for this basic booster box. Buy them while they're still available in stock, for they are VERY VERY rare and scarce. They are no longer in production, so grab yourself a box while you still can.

Nostalgia and Heart Pounding Excitement

[Background Story]
I still remember when I first bought the Base Set Starter Box with the first edition Machamp! How awesome it felt to own the cool holographic cards! I loved Pokemon! The pokemon now are so odd and bizarre that I still can't believe they are pokemon! But the original base set is where it is all at! The original 151! Though there aren't 151 pokemon cards in the base set, but still the base set is by far the best and most classical of all the sets!

My parents never bought a single base set booster pack for me, only the starter and theme decks. Over the next few set releases my parents started buying some booster packs for Christmas or my birthday and I clearly remember getting 2 Fossil booster packs for Christmas and opening them up and getting a holographic Ditto and holographic Dragonite. It felt amazing! The dragonite was my favorite out of the ones I've gotten from booster packs! Over the years I grew out of pokemon cards but I kept playing the video games and watching the TV shows and enjoying how cute or cool the original pokemon were.

And then I hit now ... I started missing my Pokemon cards and looked through my closet and found them and aww the nostalgia! I felt a wave of childhood hit me and I just loved it. I missed that feeling of opening the booster packs and getting awesome cards! So I decided that after a whole month of work, I bought the base set booster box!! :) Best decision I've made in terms of reliving part of my childhood.

I got the base set box and was surprised how small it was. I guess as a child I always thought the booster boxes were BIG but maybe my hands were just too tiny back then! It was great, I was really hoping to find a Charizard because I never owned one. At the same time I was hoping to complete my base set because I was missing some!

I got out the first pack with a Blastoise picture on the front ... opened it carefully and something caught my attention! The cards were slightly curved or bent. I was slightly disheartened but it wasn't a huge deal because they weren't in bad shape at all. I went through and then BAM! ZAPDOS! I was THRILLED! I got a ZAPDOS which was my most favorite card of the base set (yes I like it over Charizard, I think the ZAPDOS card just looks awesome! And I love electric type pokemon! zap zap). I opened the next pack and was surprised because the cards were actually flat! And it dawned on me what was going on. These cards have been around for over 10 years, which means they have been stored here and there, shipped here and there, placed here and there and probably in some way it was stored in temperatures not fully suitable for the foil used and thus the foil curved due to expanding of the foil which is caused by warm to hot temperatures. Now it isn't a huge deal, I put the holographics in a sleeve and then in a hard sleeve so they look straight now and hopefully as long as I take good care of them, they will do just swimmingly :) Though I hope to never take them for a dip.

Overall I am very satisfied, expect the cards to look faded if you own any of the more recent cards because the print back then wasn't as great and on top of that these cards are over 10 years old! Don't expect them to look as pretty as the newer ones but they still look awesome and in my opinion the holographics are some of the best out of all the pokemon cards created!

So yeah expect the cards to probably be slightly curved which makes it less exciting because you know when you get a holographic or not and you'll probably feel slightly disappointed when you open a pack of flat cards. Really you can tell the difference!

I got 11 holographics from the box which is 1 less than 1/3 of all the rares in the box which I think is great AND I got a Charizard :) So I'm very happy! It's a high chance but you still can't expect it! I was so surprised and happy that I stopped opening packs for a good 1 hour!

I'm still missing an Alakazam and Poliwrath so I might actually buy another box eventually :) Because opening the packs and finding it are so much more heart warming than buying the singles or trading for them. Plus the excitement and anticipation of finding awesome cards is what intensifies the nostalgia :)
