Could have been great, but still okay
By Shane Amazon
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R14W026AFVEFJM Let me start by saying that I really, really wanted to like this figure. When I first saw the pre-production photos I was pretty taken by how much Hasbro was willing to put into him. Now that the piece is finally out, I can honestly say that Hasbro really screwed the pooch on the final product. Amazon is ending their customer image feature so I will post a small video with this review to show you what I mean. But besides the problem I have with prototype vs end product there are other problem areas that need to be talked about as well. Let me break it down to pros and cons.

Action Figure:
For the most part this figure is pretty good. The scale of R2 is correct in relation to Luke and the added attachments remind me of what Sideshow collectibles does with their product line...only far less cheaper.

Pros-
1) Correct scale. (There were two R2's used in filming. One was the Kenny Baker R2 that came up to Lukes mid-chest. The second was a remote R2 used for some scenes and came up to the bottom of Luke's chest. This figure is more the remote version as it comes up to Luke's mid stomach, so a little low but not bad.)
2) Looks like R2
3) Added bits and pieces molded into the figure are screen accurate.
4) Additional attachments are a great feature.
5) R2's manipulator arms are playable as they all pop from his torso.
6) Three removable doors are on top of R2's head dome for putting the accessories into if you wish to display R2 that way, otherwise you can leave his blue caps on and leave the added bits in the clear molded plastic in the box.
7) Comes with Luke's lightsaber as seen in the famous Jabba/Luke execution scene.
8) Comes with jet attachments to swap out the sides of R2's legs.
9) Comes with the eye unit as seen when R2 sinks in the swamp.

Cons-
1) Seams galore. Everywhere I look on this piece there are obvious seams where pieces have come together.
2) The silver paint on the dome is less realistic then figures in the 3 ¾ line.
3) The white paint used for the body is too bright. Every piece, just about, is weather worn and Luke is too. When R2 is featured next to Luke it just seems odd to have Luke look like he's been through a sand storm and R2 looks like he just came off the factory line.
4) The appendage arms on R2's body do not open easily and tend not to open fully.
5) Very hard to swap out the blue panels on R2's dome with the added attachments he comes with.

Articulation:
The articulation of the piece is pretty standard but Hasbro added a really cool feature with an extending third leg that comes down when you spin R2's dome.

Pros-
1) As mentioned above the extending third wheel when you spin R2's dome.
2) The side legs swivel back and forth.
3) The feet pads swivel back and forth as well.

Cons-
1) R2's extendable leg has a loud click like gears slipping when over extended or retracted. This may be a good thing to prevent breaking the gears but it does scare you if you don't know its coming.

Package:
Almost as artistic as the piece itself, Hasbro's art department pulls no punches when it came to box design.

Pros-
1) One of the best features that fans really took to when these figures were announced was the package. The matte black finish and the orange line down the front really makes it stand out on shelves.

Cons-
1) The matte black surface does show scratches and indents well, so special care will need to be taken when handling if you plan to collect the product instead of play with it.

Overall:
Even though the piece is pretty good and has that brilliant extendable leg, I really am disappointed with the prototype look not being carried over to the final product it really is a worse looking R2 than what could have been.

Pros-
1) Extendable leg.
2) Great attachments.
3) Scaled right.

Cons-
1) Not as cool as the prototype.
2) Could have used better silver paint.
3) Too clean, should have been a little weathered.

Not really a toy for children
By MtRussMoore
This is an excellent figure for a serious Star Wars fan but at this price I would not recommend this for children. The black series (6") are great for display but they are so detailed they are flimsy in places and they come with several small parts that will be easy to loose or break. These are great for display but not to play with, more miniature character statues than action figures. I would have given it the full 5 stars but the molding and paint do not match up in several places and is very fragile as well

An excellent R2 figure with a ton of options
By A. Color
This is a nearly perfect R2-D2 figure at this scale and price. It has a good number of accessories to give you several display and play options. The figure has two compartments that open up at the front to reveal retractable limbs. The top of the figure has three removable plates which can be swapped out with Luke's lightsaber from Episode VI, a periscope, and antenna. The legs have swappable rocket jets. My favorite feature of the figure is the way the middle leg extends - twisting the head allows the leg to extend and retract. The articulation is as good as you could possibly get for R2. Paint and quality control is also very good. The only thing that would have made this figure better is if all of the various parts extended and retracted, rather than having to be swapped out.
